When Whitney opens her heart and home to Joel, she finds herself alone on a Caribbean island, thrust into the hidden, dark. underbelly culture.
Joel, abandoned physically and emotionally by his mother, unable to read and in constant trouble at school, is well aware of his father’s criminal record. Joel inadvertently draws Whitney into his father’s criminal activities, placing Whitney in danger, forcing Joel to make a devastating decision.
Their cultural differences and value systems over the years present monumental challenges to each as Whitney attempts to impose her practices and beliefs on Joel. With Whitney’s love, Joel begins to find himself, yet repeatedly challenges her sense of trust and tests her commitment to him.
At the end of the day, Whitney questions if Joel has made a mockery of her life and what is most important in a relationship. Joel, now a young man, struggles to fulfill a promise made to Whitney as a young child, hoping to lose the ‘mark’ he has carried all his life; proving to Whitney that her efforts were not in vain. Joel has become the man she hoped he could be.
